There is no doubt, Hospitalist services are a growing trend. More hospitals are now engaging or seriously looking at using hospitalists because a growing body of evidence indicates a hospitalist program can result in improved patient outcomes and safety, higher patient satisfaction scores, as well as better medical staff relations.

Faculty

Dr. Laurence Wellikson, MD, a board certified specialist in internal medicine, joined the Society of Hospital Medicine in January of 2000 and serves the Society as Chief Executive Officer. Prior to his current position, Dr. Wellikson practiced internal medicine and was the founder and senior manager of an integrated medical group, IPA, a management services organization in Southern California that managed the healthcare of 130,000 capitated lives and contracted with 570 physicians. He was also a founder and senior partner in MedQuest Partners, LLC, a national consulting practice specializing in physician group, hospital, and/or insurance company relationships.

Stephen T. Shaw, MD received his medical degree from University of Chicago/Pritzker and did his internship and residency at University of Chicago.  He is the Regional Medical Director for Community Hospitalists, an OHA Corporate Partner, and has played a vital role in the development of their Hospitalist program.  He is an experienced and practicing Hospitalist, and has been instrumental in the development of the Practice Policy and Procedures at Community Hospitalists and their client hospitals. Dr. Shaw has developed order sets, care pathways, patient satisfaction indicators, PDA-based software implementation to ensure evidence-based practice, and he oversees compliance with documentation and coding requirements. He also supervises the clinical practice of all staff hospitalists through direct audit and communication with Community Hospitalists physicians and Site Directors.

Barbara Harbor Evert, MD, CHQ is Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy, Ohio. She is responsible for oversight of Quality Improvement, Utilization/Case Management, Credentialing and Medical Staff Services, and Continuing Medical Education. Dr. Evert received her B. S. from the University of Dayton, her M.D. from Medical University of Ohio, Toledo, and completed a Family Practice Residency at Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.  She is a member of AMA, OSMA, AAFP, OAFP, ACPE and ABMQ.  She is certified by ABQAURP with sub-specialization in Risk Management.  Dr. Evert is a member of Anthem’s Regional Quality Committee and the CME Committee of the American College of Medical Quality. She is a Director on the Board of the Ohio Hospital Insurance Company.  She is also a Director on the Board of Veterans Health Administration Central Region.

Dr. Tom Huth is Vice President of Medical Affairs at Reid Hospital & Health Care Services, a position he’s held for the last two years.  His special areas of focus are utilization management, hospitalist program management, and employed physician practice development.  He holds degrees in medicine and business and practiced internal medicine for nineteen years prior to transitioning into administrative medicine.

Catherine M. Ballard is a partner in the Bricker & Eckler Healthcare Department with a practice focusing on the day to day operations of a variety of healthcare facilities as well as those facilities’ dealings with administrative agencies and court proceedings. She works with clients in the areas of medical staff credentialing, quality assessment/improvement, peer review, physician recruitment and contract negotiations. Her clients include hospitals, managed care organizations, group practices, and health care related professional associations.  She received her undergraduate degree at the University of Louisville and her law degree from the Ohio State University College of Law.

Charlene Nutter, RHIT is a senior consultant/director of the Audit/Compliance Services of Quality Management Consulting Group (QMCG), an OHA Corporate Partner and an affiliate consulting company of Bricker & Eckler LLP.  She has been with QMCG for more than 10 years.  Charlene works primarily with hospitals and physician practices on billing and compliance issues with particular attention to billing compliance and claims submission to third party payers, Medicare and Medicaid.  Charlene's work involves reviewing hospital's charge description master reviews, billing audits and then presenting educational programs to physicians and staff on areas identified for improvement.  In addition Charlene has more than 20 years experience working in central Ohio acute care hospitals with responsibilities for Medical Records, Compliance, and Utilization Review.  Her professional associations include membership in AHIMA, OHIMA, HFMA, and the Central Ohio Patient Accounting Management Association.
